There are different products at pet supply stores or on-line. They are sold for the purpose of removing tear stains around white dog's eyes but it also work to remove similar stains around the mouth. One brand is called Angel Eyes but there are others too. Just look for tear stain remover. The stuff is almost magic and removes the stains with a few wipes to the area.

I had a bichon years ago and had the same problem! Bloody nuisance ain't it coz it makes them look untidy even when you spent hours grooming them! Theres a powder you can get from pet shops that cleans and whitens their fur but the trouble with the mouth and eye parts is they always get wet! I just kept those area's very short. Fullers Earth ( hardware / pet shops ) is also good but as its a brown powder it can be time consuming getting it out once you've brushed it in!

What are you feeding him?
I can't say I have noticed this with my pup, I feed her dry complete puppy food. Are you feeding yours cheap, nasty tinned food or something with artificial colourants added to it?

There are whitening shamppos formulated for dogs on the market that work to some extent. I have Schnauzers and have a little success, but find it is easier to just get used to the brown as over washing is not good for any dog. Groomers and breeders use a special chalk to hide discolourations for show purposes. I suggest you call your local groomer and see what they suggest.

There are certain chemicals in a dog's saliva and tears that cause light colored dog's hair to change to a red or brownish color.
You will see it in breeds like the Bichon, Poodles, or even Golden Retrievers, (mostly in the paws and around the eyes).
There is a product called Diamond Eye, its in a small white bottle, and when you apply, it cleans these affected spots.
You will never fully get the areas white again, but it helps with the buildup of the coloring. You can find it at your local vet's office or at a pet supply store. Even ask your groomer.

Its Bichon Frise! i have four of them!
Unfortunatly they are prone to staining around the mouth and eyes-unless its excessive around the eyes(red eye) which is a fault in the breeding-staining can be removed quite simply-
As some one already said the product "diamond eyes" will remove stains, there are also lots of other products widely available in most pet shops that will remove stains. You can also make sure he is clipped to keep the hair short this makes it easier for stain removal,!!xx

I have Bichon Frise too. The lotions you buy to whiten eye area, did not work on mine. Then I heard about a powder which you put in their food, and it is brilliant stuff, my Bichon's are so white all over, including around the mouth. It is called Angels Glow or Angel Eyes, I can't buy it in the shops but buy it from the internet. Go to E-Bay and search for it. Its worth it honestly.
