Hair loss on the cheek/beard. Alopecia. started as a small spot and now its HUGE? will it go away or

Hi there, My BF noticed a small spot on the side of his beard a year ago where no hair grew. Gradually the spot got bigger and more spots appeared. Now he has a huge patch-atleast 4x5 inches-where there is no hair growing. It is terrible because its really obvious and we dont know if it will get better or worse. We are pessimistic because its just been getting worse...but atleast it has stuck to the beard. You can see tiny little white hairs on the patchy area but it basically looks hairless. Shaving doesnt help much either since he has thick hair and its still obvious. Has anyone experience alopecia of the beard and has it improved? we are very worried and i know my bf is getting depressed because of it.

Unfortunately you GP is right, there are no treatments than affect alopecia and its course is unpredictable. It is one of the conditions where the body makes antibodies against itself. All of these ' auto-immune ' diseases are poorly understood.

As usual when there is a condition where conventional medicine is weak, there is no shortage of charlatans ready to rip off the desperate, the well meaning homeopaths and herbalists and the genuine crooks.

Type alopecia cure into google and find 1.2 million sites, pretty good for a condition with no cure!

If you're worried you should go to the doctor instead of watching it grow. Do you think it'll just go away? It could be a skin rash or something so you may want to go to a dermatologist and get it checked out.

my daughter had this disease about 30 yrs ago when she was about 7yrs old..hang on,wifes up,she'll be wanting her cup of tea, back in five mins. Right she's quite happy now. We took our daughter to the docs after noticing small smooth bald patches on her scalp, we thought at first she had been fighting with her brother, and tufts of hair had been pulled out during the skirmish. The doc took one look and told us straight out that she had alopecia. we had never heard of this and we were totally devastated when he further explained that she could lose her hair altogether. There were no problems associated with the patches,so the doctor did not issue any medication, apparently there is no cure. He said we could get wigs etc. I know there are a lot worse things in life, but to be told our precious little daughter was about to lose all her hair was quite upsetting. Luckily the patches did not enlarge and disappeared within a few months. Imagine our relief.

She did not undergo any tests or anything, the doc just said alopecia. We were told that it may recur at any time, but it hasn't. She is now a handsome blonde, and has given us three grand kids. There are plenty of help groups for this disease, but in your friends case there may be a simpler explanation. The disease is not dangerous and I wish your mate well .

He may be experiencing Alopecia areata. This type of alopecia only affects small areas of the body. Some types of it heal gradually after 1-2 months without any medications but in some cases steroid injection is needed. I strongly recommend that you take your BF to a dermatologist
